Hatcher Garden Featured in American Conifer Society Newsletter
Hatcher Garden was recently featured in the American Conifer Society Southeastern Region Newsletter. This article discussed the conifers recently planted at the creek and bridge in the developing Children’s Garden. Below are the contents of that featured article:
Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve is a 13-acre private garden open to the public every day from dawn to dusk. Since the beginning, children have been a vital part of the garden. Several years ago, a Children’s Garden was envisioned to provide a learning environment designed to engage the interest and imagination of our youngest visitors.
Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve has now begun the process of designing the Children’s Garden and has recently constructed a new stone bridge and creek that will welcome visitors into the future educational space. This new addition is surrounded by plantings that include several conifers that add texture, color, and interest. The plantings, over time, will block noise and define the space for respite and education. The conifers include Cupressus arizonica (Carolina Sapphire), Cryptomeria japonica (Yoshino), Cupressus macrocarpa (Donard Gold), and Cupressus nootkatensis (Green Arrow).
Conifers enhance the backdrop of the stone structures in the garden. They create a beautiful landscape of various shades of green, yellow, and blue which are colors that encourage relaxation, growth, and restoration. Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve exists to provide a place where anyone can come for inspiration, enjoyment, and education through the study of nature. Conifers allow Hatcher Garden to further this mission by encouraging the feeling of well-being, and because of that, visitors return again and again.
The Conifer Plantings in The Children’s Garden
Below are pictures of the four conifers mentioned in the article with closeups to show the different variety of colors and textures that conifers provide for a garden.
Founded in 1983, the American Conifer Society promotes the use of conifers in the garden and landscape and educates the public about their care and conservation. In the spring of 2013, Hatcher Garden’s Conifer Display Garden was named an American Conifer Society Reference Garden, one of only 15 gardens in the Southeast to receive this designation.
