Hatcher Garden is a welcoming community of Spartanburg citizens who share a passion for horticulture, history, and sustainability.
Our gardens exist today thanks to the efforts of our volunteers and interns, who contribute to the community and make a difference with the work they do for Hatcher.
We call our volunteers the Hearts of Hatcher because that’s what they give each time they visit. Whether it’s working in the garden, helping the office, or walking the paths as a tour guide, our dedicated volunteers keep Hatcher Garden growing with their time, talent, and expertise.
We welcome individuals as well as groups of all types to volunteer at Hatcher Garden, including:
Employee Groups (example: Lowe’s & Milliken)
University Fraternities & Sororities
Honor Societies
Church Groups (Youth & Senior)
Scouts

Horticulture Helper
Work side-by-side with Dan (Executive Director), Peggy (Garden Manager) and Eli (Grounds Keeper) learning first-hand how to make your garden grow. Areas of focus include propagation, greenhouse and nursery production, plant health care, and general gardening skills. Bring gloves and hand pruners.
Garden Guide
We offer training sessions for new and returning Garden Guides each spring. With thousands of visitors each year, Hatcher relies on Garden Guides to share nature’s educational wonder with our guests.
Special Events
We always need helping hands for our exciting community events like our Spring and Fall Plant Sales, Twilight in the Garden, and Fall for Hatcher.
