Woodland Adventure Camp
by Kim Tolleson, Hatcher Garden Board Member
This year Hatcher Garden hosted a summer camp for children 2nd through 5th grade June 7th-10th. This was a timely opportunity for children to learn through activities and exploration of the garden and woodlands after a very different type of school year due to social distancing, limited hands-on experiences in the classroom and virtual learning for some. This Science and Art Camp was both entertaining and educational incorporating Science, Mathematics, Language Arts, and Social Studies. The campers reported that their favorite activities were planting flowers in pots and planting a tree with Mr. Dan in the Garden.
CDC guidelines were observed concerning health of camp participants. The entire camp experience was held outdoors. The campers learned about garden and woodland habitats, trees, plants, propagation, and the benefits of nature, being outside, and healthy living.
The camp was unique and enjoyed by all. One parent sent in a video showing where her daughter came home and planted flowers. The child explained that you must not plant too deep or too high, but just right like Mr. Dan said.
Our mission is respite, education, and exercise; we were privileged to provide this for our young campers.
