Water Cooler Moments
by Dan Shook, Garden Manager
Someone I was talking with said that the one item our business world lost due to workplace shutdowns over the last year is water cooler chats. Some might think this chit chat is wasted time, but he said ideas casually exchanged at the water cooler often led to great successes.
Hatcher Garden holds a plant sale every morning, Monday through Friday, and it has done as well as expected. However, a simple water cooler idea from Peggy led to setting up an unattended plant sale stand in the Jess Taylor Pavilion. I thought it would be a stretch, because of theft of plants and I really gave it little encouragement. The volunteers had the nursery looking very nice and propagation of new plants was on-going, so stock was not going to be in short supply. We will try it, I thought. . .
Peggy’s idea began to produce sales every night while we were away. And sales continued and continued! Plant sales, due to the quality of the plants, the plant sale stand, and our wonderful volunteers, has far exceeded our expectations.
Come and check out our stand, nursery, and Garden for ideas, gifts, or just a happy plant. Visit the Garden and take a part of it with you. Visit the Garden and be inspired!
