In Memory of Alice Hatcher Henderson

Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve and the Spartanburg community is mourning the loss of Alice Hatcher Henderson who passed away on Saturday, December 12, 2020. One of the garden’s founders, with her parents Harold & Josephine Hatcher, Alice was a honorary Trustee on the board of Trustees for Hatcher Garden. She could be often seen in the garden working, especially in the garden room dedicated to her mother, the Josephine Hatcher Woodland Garden, which features mostly woodland flowers that bloom in the spring. We always looked forward to see what new surprises would pop up in the spring that she had planted the previous fall. A granite bench is dedicated to Alice in her mother’s garden. Not only an avid gardener, Dr. Henderson was a scholar and community activist, having a long distinguished teaching career at USC Upstate. Her presence in our community will truly be missed.
