The kids are back at school. How about you? Why not take a class yourself? An enjoyable one. Autumn is an excellent time to be in the garden with the trees in their grand display of color.

The Tuesday sessions, focusing on drawing in nature, will provide participants with the tools to start down their own path to journaling the world around them, allowing participants to explore Hatcher Garden with their own journals.

“Slowing down and seeing the amazing world around you can reduce stress and lower blood pressure.” said Julia Burnett, artist and Hatcher Garden board member who is coordinating the event. “Helen will discuss nature journaling, including drawing and writing in nature.  She will show different approaches to journaling through sharing some of her own journal entries.”

“Most of all, keeping a nature journal is something you can share with your children, it will help children learn to love the earth. It’s human nature: we love what we know,” Burnett said of the value of learning to observe and record nature.

Learn how simple it is to connect to nature, through drawing, writing and listening…

Helen Scott Correll is the author of Middlewood Journal: Drawing Inspiration from Nature, a book that grew out of the long walks she took with her dogs around her home in the Piedmont of South Carolina. Retreating to her studio in the forest behind her home, she would then paint and write about her day’s journey as well as upload to her blog. That book is available from Hub City Press or your local bookstore. Helen will be available to sign her book.
