Focusing on drawing in nature, the Tuesday workshop sessions will provide participants with the tools to start journaling the world around them. The group begins by exploring Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve with their own journals.

“Slowing down and seeing the amazing world around you is good for you: you can reduce stress and lower blood pressure while experiencing nature,” says Julia Burnett, artist and Hatcher Garden board member who is coordinating the event. Burnett continues, Helen Correll will discuss nature journaling, including drawing and writing in nature. She will also show different approaches to journaling by sharing many of her own journal entries.

“Most importantly, keeping a nature journal is something you can share with children to help them learn to love the earth. It’s human nature that we love what we know,” says Burnett of the value of learning to observe and record nature.

Join this artistic event in the garden to learn how simple it is to connect to nature through drawing, writing, and using your senses. The cool days and colorful foliage of autumn are a great time to take this workshop!

nature journaling Helen Scott Correll is the author of Middlewood Journal: Drawing Inspiration from Nature, a book that grew out of the long walks she took with her dogs around her home in the Piedmont of South Carolina. Retreating to her studio in the forest behind her home, she would then paint and write about her day’s journey as well as upload to her blog. That book is available from Hub City Press or your local bookstore. Helen will be available to sign her book.
