he Thomas W. Bartram Trail was established in honor of Tom in 2010. Many Bartram trails have been established throughout the Southeast, where William Bartram, the famed botanist, traveled in the early 1700s identifying and cataloging native fauna and flora in colonial America. Tom’s wife Marianne thought it would be so fitting for Hatcher Garden & Woodland Preserve to have its own Bartram Trail. With the help of family and friends the necessary funds were raised and he was notified as a Christmas remembrance. Different native varieties of plants that were identified by William Bartram have been planted along the trail and new ones will be added in time. The Thomas W. Bartram Honorarium Fund has been established at The Spartanburg County Foundation to insure the continued upkeep and development of the trail.

Now the Trail is not only in honor of but in memory of Tom after his death in November 22, 2011. He was a very good friend of Mr. Hatcher, helping in many ways with the early development of Hatcher Garden & Woodland Preserve and served on the founding Board of Trustees. A bench in honor of Marianne was placed at the stone patio shortly before her passing on November 25, 2013.
